When a friend used this phrase recently, it simply staggered me! No one is unaffected by the pandemic. “Global Time Out! We can no longer ignore our global interdependence. Nor can we ignore the fact that EVERYTHING is exposed.
Our update this month is an invitation to explore beyond the surface of the pandemic we are experiencing as a global community.
It is an opportunity
to examine what it means
to identify ourselves as part of a larger whole,
part of a global community.
In the U.S., the pandemic has awakened us to some profound realities that have shaken our world. Some of our embedded beliefs which we thought were absolute truth have been exposed as whitewashed fabrications and misrepresentations. The pandemic revealed the existing deep racial divide as it became clear that the impact of job loss, school closure, work by computer at home was inconvenient to some, and completely devastating to those who were already disadvantaged. The results of the pandemic brought to light the privilege of being white and it has challenged a fundamental pillar of U.S. culture ~ Individualism.
Individualism has been a treasured characteristic, a strength of the U. S. culture ~ and ~ it has blinded us to the profound necessity for community, for understanding the basic need to be part of a larger whole. We’ve missed the truth that individuality is inseparable from community. We’ve missed the understanding that everything is what it is only in relation to everything else.
